BLESSINGS OF BEING A DOCTORAL STUDENT OF S3 IPB, UNY


Being a Doctoral Student in the Language Educational Science (IPB) Study Program, Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY) has become one of the most important life episodes in my life journey. Why is that? It is on this campus where I have been fully developing my academic competence. There were three main milestones that really stuck in my mind while I was a doctoral student in this IPB Study Program: academic development, hard work values, and social relations. Academic development became the cornerstone of the extraordinary foundation that I have received from this doctoral study program. It is said to be a basic pillar in my academic journey because S3 IPB, UNY, became a place where I could learn many things from the professors who were the experts in their respective fields and were full of dedication in helping me to be able to grow and develop academically in accordance with the scientific field I chose. I got a lot of things in the realm of scientific thinking from the Language Educational Scince Study Program. My scientific insight developed reliably here, which in turn has made me a person who, according to my personal standards, has a broader perspective in the field of language education, especially English education. In this context I also become a person who can thrive and develop rapidly in the realm of theoretical concepts for research, especially in the field of qualitative research. The fundamental principles inscribed by the professors in this Study Program triggered a huge explosion for me in establishing the Research Training Center and Research Technology Training Center soon I graduated from this study program.

I could not only get a job as a lecturer after graduation but also create a job opportunity for other people through the research training center I established.  The second basic milestone that underlay my next academic life after I graduated from the Doctoral Program of IPB UNY is the value of hard work instilled in each S3 student, which I personally feel as the value of extraordinary self-development. The patterns of upbringing and guidance of the professors who did not indulge students in studying, doing class assignments, and doing research for dissertations made me realize that in life there is no achievement without hard work. The early days of college were tough, but the assistance, help, and guidance of the lecturers helped me a lot and triggered me to finish my doctoral study successfully. I am very grateful to the lecturers of the IPB Study Program, UNY Yogyakarta. This further proves that everything needs a process and hard work. With the right guidance, this hard work will lead someone, like me, to brilliant success in life.The third fundamental milestone that has also helped me in developing myself both academically and non-academically is social relations with all related parties at the UNY Postgraduate Program. I grew and developed academically in the midst of a good social relationship which led me to the conclusion that good social relations between students and related parties on campus greatly benefit a student. That's what I experienced in the Doctoral Study Program of IPB, UNY. This good relationship made it easier for me to complete my studies at UNY smoothly

In sum, I grew and developed well during my doctoral study and after graduating from Doctoral Program of IPB UNY because of the good academic environment, the support of all Postgraduate management parties, especially the ones at IPB UNY Study Program, and other parties on this campus. And of course, the hard work and totality of my Promotor and Co-Promotor in guiding me in completing the dissertation became a point of my life history that I had to engrave in gold ink in my life .

Thank you IPB UNY, the lecturers, and my supervisors. I love you very much. Thank you for shaping me to become a person who can study well and optimally at IPB UNY.

IPB S3 UNY values Academic, Professional, and Personal development. I find IPB S3 UNY a very caring and encouraging environment. The lecturers are professional and helpful in assisting students’ academic and personal  development. Furthermore, IPB S3 UNY favors both dynamic and hands-on experiences. Students are provided with various opportunities, such as internship, research and related conferences which  have been proven to support  and facilitate students’ future career. Finally, the best things about being a student here are the lecturers’ continuous   guidance and students’ numerous activities; both aspects that have brought me to this point in my life. It is a nice place with nice people surrounding when studying. It entails everlasting discussions till present. Humble professors inspire students' achievement.

I knew that after I received my master’s degree in TESOL from St. Cloud State University of Minnesota, USA, I would want to continue my education into a doctoral degree. The idea had been lingering for way too long until I finally found Yogyakarta State University (YSU) as a venue for me to grow excellent in language education. I have also been lucky enough to have an outstanding support system from the university, colleagues, and professors at YSU, without which I would not be able to manage to graduate summa cum laude and right on time. Indeed, with incessant efforts and correct time management, every doctoral student can surely manage to graduate timely. In addition to this, the lived experience and support at YSU have turned into an academic journey I never thought possible, full of joy and warmness; and I could not be more thankful.
