ELTI Kompas Gramedia National Academic Manager Achieves Doctoral Degree in UNY

Silvester Goridus Sukur, a man born in Paang Lembor, West Manggarai, Flores, NTT, 51 years ago successfully defended his dissertation entitled "Communicative Competence Development, Contextuality, and Character Education in the English Textbooks used by Senior High Schools in Yogyakarta Special Territory". The author of this book reveals the extent to which the contents of high school English textbooks have been developed to improve the communicative competence of English high school students in Yogyakarta Special Territory. Silvester also wants to reveal the extent to which the value of character education has been included in these textbooks, and the extent to which English books in Indonesia meet the needs of teachers and students in Indonesia, which in fact is multisosiocultural, multi-lingual and multi-ethnic.

Employing content analysis research, Silvester finds several findings in this study, among others, high school English textbooks have met the needs of teachers and students. Then in the context of developing communicative competence, some materials have been developed; however, some other related materials are not good for pre-communicative activities or for communicative activities. Therefore, the students will find it difficult to practice English integratively because not all skills are developed in these books.

Silvester adds that the difficulty level of the material in these books is suitable for students in big cities. In terms of contextuality, the contents of these books have been developed contextually even though there are some materials that are not contextual. Silvester finds these books are developed with national standards so that they are not contextual at a certain level due to different regional and socio-cultural conditions of the students, concluded the author who has written more than 150 English textbooks for elementary school, junior high school, and senior high school.
